A SHEEP IS LOST AT THE FORKED ROAD

杨子之邻人亡羊，既率其党，又请杨子之竖追之。杨子曰：“嘻！亡一羊，何追者之众？”邻人曰：“多歧路。”



既反，问：“获羊乎？”曰：“亡之矣。”曰：“奚亡之？”曰：“歧路之中有歧焉，吾不知所之，所以反也。”杨子戚然变容，不言者移时，不笑者竟日。



白话翻译



杨子的邻居丢了羊，邻居既率领着他的亲属，又请求杨子的小厮一块儿去追赶跑掉的羊。杨子说：“咦！丢了一条羊，为什么追他的人那么多？”邻居说：“因为有很多岔路。”



邻居回来了以后，杨子问：“找到羊了吗？”邻居说：“把羊给丢了。”杨子说：“为什么把羊给丢了呢？”邻居说：“岔路里又有岔路，我不知道他跑到哪条岔路去了，所以我就回来啦。”杨子很忧伤的改变了脸色，沉默了很久，一整天都不笑。
